So this young man, who happens to be married, was talking about how in 9 months time a lot of quarantine-babies will be born!!!
Errm who amongst you all participated in finishing the condoms in stores all around the Country? I heard the rush was mad!!! Lazy yoots.😒
Well🙃considering the circumstances I may not entirely congratulate you😒 but I must commend those who chose to practice safety, especially in these difficult times where safety is the watch word, the government will be proud! (Not forgetting that if you abstain God will be more proud!)

Somewhile ago, I had a brief conversation with Dr. Stella Agbogu who works with one of the branches of the General Hospital in Nigeria on the issue of safe sex. This period is definitely a time to share this,  I hope you learn a thing or two!

What does unsafe sex means?
It means when a man have sex without using a condom or a woman without using diaphragm.

Can you explain what a diaphragm means?
It is just like a male condom but wider, it is cylinder-like.

What are the disadvantages of having unsafe sexual intercourse?  Apart from unwanted pregnancy, it is contracting Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

What is the different between Sexually Transmitted Infections and Sexually Transmitted Diseases?
They are used synonymously. Sexually Transmitted Infections, Sexually Transmitted Diseases or Venereal Diseases.

What are the commonest STIs?
The Chlamydia is the commonest in both male and female. We also have Gonorrhea, Syphilis and others.

What are the symptoms of STIs for males?
They can have pains or discomfort during sexual intercourse, or when they want to urinate, they can also have sores, burns or itches around the testis, and even the mouth. Some persons have rashes on their thigh and the rashes don’t easily go away. They can also have unusual discharge in their urethra  and painful or swollen testicles.

What are the symptoms of STIs for females?
The females could experience pains or discomfort during sex, or while urinating. They have sores or rashes on the vagina or around it, in the anus, buttock, and thighs or even on their mouth. We call it cold sores on the mouth. The females could also have unusual or abnormal vagina discharge. During ovulation, there is a kind of discharge a female have, slimy and colourless. It doesn’t smell. The abnormal discharge is excess, some ladies will have to wear a small pad because it is staining their pants excessively, and it also smells. Instead of the whitish or colourless discharge, the person has milky or greenish discharge. There is also itchiness around the vagina area.

How does one detect STIs?
If you see a qualify doctor, he will send you to a lab for an appropriate test and it will also be interpreted by him.

What are the harmful effects of STIs?
If left untreated, women can have pelvic inflammatory diseases, which can in the long run cause infertility. STIs increase the risk of contracting HIV, pregnant women can transmit the infection to their unborn baby and the baby will have the infection. There are some babies who are born with eyes infection, one of the organisms that could causes it is Chlamydia. Gonorrhea and syphilis can also be transmitted to the newly born. This can pose a very serious health problem to the unborn child who could come down with pneumonia or blindness.

Are the native treatments used for treating STIs alternatives to orthodox medicine?
It is not an alternative because you don’t know what the concussion it is composed of. They may have incorporated a little of the orthodox but they do not know the appropriate dosage. When you think of the risk if the STI is left untreated properly, the best thing is to use the orthodox means.

Are there side effects of contraceptive especially emergency pills?
They are used for family planning. They however, have side effects and are to be used in a particular way. Like the emergency contraceptive shouldn’t be used more than once a month.
